In Matchday 7 of the Premier League, Manchester United were held to a 1-1 away draw against Leeds United. Following the match, Manchester United manager Michael Carrick attended the post-match press conference.

Reporter: I want to ask for your thoughts on the team's performance today, as well as the commitment shown by the players. It seemed everyone was genuinely willing to match the opponent's intensity.

Carrick: Yes, the team absolutely showed that commitment today. That level of application is essential. I told you guys a couple of days ago that I never doubted it for a second. The atmosphere I felt around the group over the last few days, and the way the lads went about their business, was genuinely the best it's been for a long time. I was really looking forward to the match today, to see if the team could produce that sharpness and intensity. I spoke with the lads this morning about the magnitude of this fixture, the history, and what it means to the supporters, to the club, and to us coming here, as well as what it takes to win here. If you come here underprepared, it will test you. I think that while it wasn't a perfect performance today, the lads unequivocally demonstrated how united this group is, and just how desperate they were to get something from the game today.

Reporter: You spoke earlier about learning about the players from these matches. Did anything surprise you today?

Carrick: To be completely honest, nothing surprised me today. We're not getting carried away because we didn't win the football match. But I believe that if you keep doing the right things for the right reasons, you will ultimately get what you deserve. Today felt like a fresh beginning, accepting where we currently are and taking action. It unequivocally showed that the lads are desperate to do their absolute best for each other, and it highlighted how deeply they cherish playing for this football club. There has been a real sense of purpose around the group over the past few days, and they brought that onto the pitch. Today was a demanding match; their style of play can easily expose flaws, but the lads handled it remarkably well.

Reporter: The team currently sits on seven points, which feels like only half of what was expected from the table. That simply isn't good enough.

Carrick: Listen, we aren't accepting the narrative that everything is fine—far from it. I am very realistic. Sometimes you do struggle, and sometimes you have to find a way to dig yourselves out of difficult moments. We haven't truly lived through that scenario yet. We must find our way through. There have been cyclical phases here where things drifted in different directions; we have to remain stable enough to keep doing the right things as a collective group, for the right reasons. We are fully capable of winning football matches—it comes down to what you choose to focus on. I understand that if you look at it from a certain angle, things don't look great, but I have no doubt whatsoever that we can put together a strong run of form.

Reporter: Does this reality make you feel that, no matter what happens, you remain the right person to lead this team forward?

Carrick: I am not sitting here comparing to any given moment. All I know is what we possess inside that dressing room, where we want to go, and how we intend to get there. We know we can do it; we have already shown it for stretches. We genuinely feel we are a better team right now. Sometimes it doesn't always show on the surface, but you can feel it, and I take a lot of encouragement from many things. We must continue doing the right things. I still firmly believe we can have a very good season.
